The San Francisco Bay estuarine ecosystem has national and international importance because of its location on the Pacific Flyway. Its baylands provide habitat for more than 1,000 species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates. They purify the water, minimize flooding, and offer many recreational opportunities to their human neighbors. Protecting baylands' unique characteristics is essential to maintaining of the biological diversity of the estuary, and for restoring health to this area lost through years of development.
